"Lighter in the glass, this appellation blend shows pomegranate sorbet, cranberry skins, rose petals and wild herbs on the nose. The palate is crisp and tart with raspberry fruit that's lifted by chaparral spice and wild thyme."

91 Points - Burghound

"Discreet hints of oak toast and menthol character can be found on the herbal tea-inflected nose that features notes of dark raspberry, cherry, spice and a touch of earth. The nicely rich and sleek middle weight flavors possess an appealing sense of vibrancy that carries over to the lingering, balanced and delicious finish that evidences a hint of bitter cherry pit. Like the Melville, this beautifully textured effort needs to develop better depth and it should be able to do so as once again, the underlying material is very promising."

Santa Maria Valley

96 Points - Wine Enthusiast
"This block-designate wine shows flamboyant aromas of red cherry, cola, purple flowers and light caramel. The palate offers an amazingly cohesive and zesty experience, combining piquant cranberry and tart raspberry with slate-driven minerality and a persistent woody spice. The texture is soft, but lifted by strong acidity."

94 Points - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
"Racy, silky and beautifully nuanced, the Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Block 8 captures all the richness of the year while retaining terrific energy. The red berry and floral notes show quite a bit of nuance and silkiness in a Pinot that manages to be both powerful and refined. The aromatic, highly expressive finish adds to the wine's considerable beauty."

93 Points - Wine Advocate, W. Kelley
"The 2015 Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard Block 8 is quite Burgundian in profile, wafting from the glass with aromas of wild berries, grilled game bird, spice and rich soil. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, sappy and savory, with fine tannins and a penetrating, sapid finish. 800 cases were produced."

92 Points - JebDunnuck.com
"A big step up over the Santa Maria Valley release, the 2015 Pinot Noir Block 8 Bien Nacido offers a terrific bouquet of black cherries, saddle leather, spice-box and dried herbs. It's fresh, nicely concentrated and textured, with good acidity, and will benefit from short term cellaring."

91 Points - California Grapevine
"Medium-light to medium ruby; attractive, fragrant, earthy, black cherry and raspberry fruit aroma with hints of baking spices and sandalwood; medium to medium-full body; rich, fleshy, red fruit flavors with good depth, bright acidity, and a silky mouthfeel; medium to medium-full tannin; lingering aftertaste. Shows some elegance and very appealing to drink over the next year or two. Very highly recommended."

90 Points - Burghound
"A slightly riper nose features notes of both red and dark pinot fruit that are well laced with spice and similar lavender nuances. There is more volume and mid-palate density to the delicious, caressing yet vibrant medium-bodied flavors that deliver better depth and persistence in a moderately structured package that is presently just a bit youthfully austere."

95 Points - JebDunnuck.com

"The 2016 Pinot Noir Block 43 Bien Nacido comes from a single block in the Bien Nacido Vineyard and was aged 17 months in one-third new French oak. It's not far from the Block 8 cuvée yet has slightly more new oak as well as beautiful cassis and strawberry fruits, spice box, violets, and crushed rocks. Voluptuous and sexy on the palate, with a stacked mid-palate, this beauty fills the mouth with fruit and displays no hard edges, nicely integrated acidity, and a beautifully pure, balance style."

92 Points - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

"The 2016 Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Block 43 is an attractive, fruity wine. The style here favors a bit more overt fruit and immediacy than is found in the Block 8. Bright red cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, blood orang and baking spice flavors are nicely delineated."

92 Points - Wine Enthusiast

"This coveted block designation from a historic property combines rich aromas of black cherry and dark berry with gamy hints of roasted pork and composting violets. It's bright and tart at first on the palate before wood spice, roasted cherry and cherry pit show in the midpalate. It's still a young wine."

91 Points - Burghound

"There is a bit more menthol character present on the cool and airy yet ripe aromas that combine notes of black cherry and raspberry with those of anise, sandalwood and violet. The exceptionally rich and sappy fuller-bodied flavors possess a bit more mid-palate density and the abundant dry extract imparts a lush mouth feel yet the youthfully austere and ever-so-mildly warm finish immediately tightens up. This is also very good and while I slightly prefer the Block 8, it will be most interesting to revisit both of these in 8 to 10 years."

94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"Another of the more Burgundian-styled wines in the portfolio, the 2015 Pinot Noir Julia's Vineyard reveals lovely aromas of clove, rose hip, red berry fruit and spicy new oak, followed by a medium-bodied, juicy palate with a sapid core of fruit framed by velvety tannins and an intense, lingering finish." - William Kelley

93 Points - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
"One of the many highlights in this lineup from Foxen, the 2015 Pinot Noir Julia's Vineyard captures all the best qualities of the year. Black cherry, plum, lavender and spice all flesh out in this decidedly seductive, beautifully resonant Pinot Noir."

92 Points - Burghound
"A spicy and more deeply pitched nose combines notes of dark cherry, plum and violets. There is good volume and richness to the round, velvet-textured and seductive medium weight flavors that possess fine depth and length on the moderately robust finale. While there is a trace of austerity, what impresses me here is that there is already very good depth, which isn't something that I typically find with Julia's when it's young. Worth checking out."

91 Points - JebDunnuck.com
"The 2015 Pinot Noir Julia's Vineyard is another forward, sexy, straight up charming wine. It lacks the focus and definition of some of the other cuvées, yet has loads of strawberry and raspberry fruit, medium to full-bodied richness, a mouth filling texture and a good finish. Drink it over the coming 4-6 years."

"Dark mulberry, black raspberry and slate start the nose of this bottling from one of the region's most coastal vineyards, but then comes a tremendous amount of black sage, Earl Grey tea and the slightest touch of game on the nose. Dark-berry flavors are cut by thyme and lavender on the palate, which is rich yet fresh, tart and lovely."

93 Points - JebDunnuck.com
"Strawberries, violets, citrus blossom, and some exotic passion fruit characteristics all emerge from the 2016 Pinot Noir Solomon Hills Vineyard, a pretty, elegant, perfumed wine that has tons to love. Possessing medium-bodied richness, nicely integrated acidity, and a clean finish, it's one of the more vibrant, racy wines in the lineup. Give bottles 2-3 years of bottle age and it will keep for 10-15 years or more. This cuvée spent 17 months in one-third new French oak."

92 Points - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

"Foxen's 2016 Pinot Noir Solomon Hills capture all the raciness that is so typical of this Santa Maria site. Perfumed, supple and nicely textured, the 2016 will drink well right out of the gate. Ideally, it would have been nice to see a little more depth here, but the 2016 is still quite attractive."

"The impressively plump and prominent strawberry and red-currant aromas are alluring on the nose, enhanced by touches of cinnamon and pepper dust. The palate combines savory pepper spice, red plums and berries, with a solidly simmering acidity shimmering through the entire sip."

92+ Points - Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown
"Pale to medium ruby-purple colored, the 2015 Pinot Noir Solomon Hills Vineyard gives a nose of kirsch, cranberry sauce and rhubarb pie with touches of baking spices and violets. The medium-bodied palate sports a great core of vibrant red fruits, supported by fine-grained tannins and appealing freshness, finishing with lingering spice hints."

92 Points - JebDunnuck.com
"I also loved the 2015 Pinot Noir Solomon Hills Vineyard, and it's a broad, expansive red that shows the power and fruit-forward style of the vineyard. Kirsch, framboise, dried tea and spice aromas and flavors all emerge from this beauty, and it's already drinking nicely, yet will easily keep through 2025."

2015 - Pinot Noir - Riverbench Vineyard

Santa Maria Valley

Product Sheet

$52 - Sold Out

This vineyard was originally planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir during the 1970’s in the Santa Maria Valley. Few of these early plantings exist anymore or are economically productive, so a second wave plantings were installed in 2007 and 2008. And we were invited to come on board to source pinot noir, choosing our acreage and clones, from the Riverbench Vineyard in 2008. This Pinot Noir is a selection of our best barrel lots from their Block 38 (Dijon Clone 667 & Swan). The Riverbench terroir differs much from the high mesa terroir of the Tepusquet bench across the Sisquoc River, more alluvial (water born) sand and river rock as opposed to gravity born heavier soils, and tends to let the Pinots show more earthy and soft fruit elements. This wine displays abundant notes of beet root, strawberry, rhubarb and berry pie crust--with bright acidity and medium soft tannins. It was bottled without fining or filtration. It’s very approachable now, and willing to match up with almost any poultry, fish or salad. Drink now through 2023.

"Black cherries, toasted spice, licorice and wild herbs all emerge from the balanced, gorgeously textured 2014 Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills. And, it’s a smoking value that has both fruit and complexity. It will shine for 4-5 years."

91 Points - Wine Enthusiast

"Concentrated red cherries, dried purple flowers, fresh rose petals and a wet gravel minerality show on the nose of this bottling by Billy Wathen and Dick Dore. It's light in body and fairly delicate on the sip, with Earl Grey tea, stewed cranberry and rose-hip flavors."

94 Points - Wine Enthusuast

"There's an impressive array of aromas on the nose of this bottling, starting with light red cherry and pomegranate before intensifying into boysenberry jam with loads of star anise and dried ginger along the way. The mouthfeel is full, carrying boysenberry-jam flavors laced with sandalwood, myrrh and anise."

92+ Points - JebDunnuck.com

"Slightly darker colored, the 2016 Pinot Noir John Sebastiano Vineyard (17 months in 40% new French oak) is a much bigger, richer Pinot Noir that offers lots of black cherry and blackberry fruits intermixed with spice, forest floor, and a distinct salty minerality. It too is juicy and racy on the palate, with high yet integrated acidity. It's a beautiful wine, yet like the Solomon Hills releases, it needs 2-3 years of bottle age."

92 Points - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

"The 2016 Pinot Noir John Sebastiano Vineyard is a powerful, explosive wine endowed with considerable richness. Layers of fruit fill out the wine's vertical frame effortlessly. There is tremendous depth to the blue/purplish fruit. It will be interesting to see if greater nuance develops over time. Today, the JSV Pinot is a bit one-dimensional, although it is undeniably hugely appealing."

"Christmas spice, peppery mint, candied cherries and hints of strawberries all emerge from the 2015 Pinot Noir La Encantada Vineyard, and it's another beautiful, elegant, seamless Pinot Noir from this terrific estate. However, like too many 2015s, it drops off on the finish, yet the tannin is beautifully managed and I suspect it will evolve gracefully."

92 Points - California Grapevine

91+ Points - Wine Advocate
"Pale ruby-purple colored, the 2015 Pinot Noir la Encantada Vineyard has a delicate nose of kirsch and red roses with a sautéed herbs and earthy undercurrent. Light-bodied and very fine-boned on the palate, it has fine-grained, silken tannins and lovely freshness, finishing with a softly spoken perfume.."

91 Points - Wine Spectator
"Well-sculpted, with savory vibrancy to the red plum, macerated cherry and raspberry flavors. The minerally finish is svelte and full of sumptuous spiciness. Drink now through 2022. 802 cases made."

90 Points - Burghound
"A much more high-toned nose offers up cool and admirably pure aromas of spiced red cherry along with wisps of raspberry and a top note of cranberry. The sleek, focused and well-delineated middle weight flavors possess a really lovely mouth feel that is less muscular but notably finer that continues onto the dusty, sappy and linear finish. This is quite firm and even a bit youthfully austere and a wine that will need at least a few years of cellaring first."

92 Points - JebDunnuck.com
"The 2015 Pinot Noir Fe Ciega Vineyard is reserved aromatically, yet offers solid notes of black raspberries, barnyard, spice and dusty earth. Medium-bodied, fresh and lively on the palate, with bright, yet integrated acidity. It's a beautiful wine I'd happily drink anytime over the coming 7-8 years."

92 Points - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
"A deep, luscious wine, the 2015 Pinot Noir Fe Ciega offers superb textural resonance and creaminess, with layers of dark-fleshed fruit that open up beautifully in the glass. This is a terrific example of the best 2015 has to offer. Supple and inviting, the 2015 Fe Ciega will drink well pretty much upon release."

91 Points - Burghound
"Here the equally cool and airy nose is almost a blend of the Block 43 and the Encantada as there are both upper and lower register aromas that remain mostly on the red side of the fruit spectrum along with ample spice elements. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the powerful yet caressing medium-bodied flavors that possess very good mid-palate density where the dry extract serves to buffer the moderate firm tannins shaping the complex, serious and youthfully austere finish. This is at once refined but built-to-age and I would recommend buying this only if you intend to cellar it as it's a bit taciturn at present."

"This is aromatically similar to the Julia's but with even more spice influence. The succulent, round and once again seductively textured medium weight flavors possess a caressing mouth feel thanks to the plenitude of dry extract that imparts a velvety aspect to the firm, serious and slightly austere finale. There is really good underlying material and this walks a fine line between being robust but not rustic. Good stuff in a built-to-age package. This too is well-worth your interest."
